Microsoft releases important updates on the second Tuesday of each month (e.g. Patch Tuesday).  CDF computers have been configured to automatically receive these important updates. You may be prompted to install these automatic updates.

Generally updates are applied and your computer is restarted overnight as long as you leave your computer on and you are not logged in.  Occasionally some computers miss this overnight update restart cycle and this will result in the Windows Update messages below.

Automatic Updates messages

If Windows updates were downloaded and applied, you may see the message displayed below on your computer.  While you are logged in to your computer windows will not restart automatically.  It will however continue to remind you that it needs to restart this can be postponed until you are done for the day and apply them when you leave for the day.

To apply updates immediately, close any open applications (Cloud Desktop, Internet, etc.). Then click Restart Now.

If you postpose the restart of both Windows 7 and Windows 10 the operating system will force the updates if you perform a Shutdown/Restart from the start menu.  Laptop users if you put your computer to  sleep while this message is postponed you may be forced to update your computer on the next Shutdown/Restart cycle.

If your computer becomes stuck or seems unresponsive during the updates please notify the CDF Helpdesk do not restart your computer or power off it could damage the operating system.
